Clachan Cottage is situated at the heart of Anwoth next to Anwoth Old Schoolhouse, and opposite Anwoth Old Kirk. Formally a traditional “But n Ben” it could well have been occupied by the school teacher for the Old Schoolhouse. There is no clear understanding of the original meaning of But n Ben but the general consensus is that it was a simple two roomed residence with the But being the kitchen and the Ben being the living and sleeping area, with a fireplace at each end.
At one time two families may have been housed in the same cottage, one family living at the But end the other at the Ben end. Clachan means a small village or hamlet around a clearing in a wooded area and usually containing a church.
In the refurbishment of Clachan Cottage care has been taken to retain its charm and character and to provide a warm, comfortable and homely atmosphere.
The Lounge/Dining area has French Doors which lead on to a sunny South facing patio in a beautiful secluded garden from where you can hear the gentle bubbling of the burn. The brave little birds and the cheeky red squirrels will visit the bird table whether you are sitting on the patio or in the cottage with the doors open. There is a TV and DVD player if the entertainment of the birds and squirrels proves not to be enough. Wi-Fi is also available.
The woodburning stove set in the original fireplace gives off lots of heat and is cosy on the coldest of winter nights. It is a real feature of the cottage and we find that guests just can’t resist lighting it even in the summer when it can be turned down to give a nice atmosphere. Background heating is provided by night storage heaters which are situated throughout the cottage and the cost is included in the tariff. The first basket of wood is also complementary.
The bedroom has a comfortable double bed, (linen is supplied) a wardrobe and dressing table. A storage heater supplies background heat if needed. A hair dryer is also supplied. Additional blankets can be provided if necessary.
If you wish to cook for yourself then the kitchen is well equipped for all your cooking needs with a full range of crockery, cutlery and cooking utensils. Cooking is by electric oven hob and microwave. There is a chest freezer and spin dryer in an adjoining outbuilding.
The bathroom is fully tiled with a bath, a shower over the bath, toilet and wash basin. Towels are provided.
The cottage has its own private garden and you can spend many entertaining hours watching the red squirrels and many species of birds who come to visit. Guests are welcome in the adjoining garden with its fine collection of rare and unusual plants, trees and shrubs.
There's a wildlife pond, koi pond and burn which runs through both gardens. Various song birds, woodpeckers, pheasants and the rare red squirrels are frequent visitors to the garden and provide guests to the cottage with many hours of entertainment.
